0.3 Update Dev Notes 2/19/2024

Hello! Hope everyone is doing well. I just got back from vacation and started working on the next update for Potion Maze. Figured this would be a good time to talk about how it's going and what's in store. So lets get into it!

First things first, I removed the battle system. At first, a turn based battle system seemed like a cool idea and I released the feature into 0.2 without much thought. Well, I played the game myself and saw how difficult it was unless you grinded EXP. My initial thought was to balance it, so I began tweaking numbers. Then I realized... this kinda sucks for a game like this. I want Potion Maze to have its own level of challenge, but in general I want it to be a relaxing dungeon crawler. Nothing you have to try too hard on, ya know? So instead of a battle system, the Mimic Chests will simply dish out a set number of damage. Now the game is more about managing your inventory and being properly prepared for each Maze through the use of items and such, as opposed to a full on combat scenario where you have to manage stats and whatever else. This adds challenge, while avoiding an added layer of complication that just simply isn't needed for a game like this.

Secondly, building off of the first point, there will be Trap tiles added in 0.3! These tiles will be hidden until stepped on by the player, and each will have their own effects that the player will have to adapt too. Due to this new feature, there will also be more items added to the shop that will help the player overcome these obstacles.

Third, more NPC's! I don't plan to have crazy side quests or anything of that nature. However, I did feel as though the Mazes needed their own "secrets" of sorts for the player to find on their journey. So coming in 0.3, each Maze will have more of their own NPC's to find and interact with. The player can have these interactions at their leisure, and it will not negatively effect the player should they choose to ignore them completely. Of these NPC's, I will be adding a long time friend and supporter to the game for winning a contest... that we never had! Our buddy SiriusX beat ver. 0.1 in 4 minutes and 20 seconds. So his reward is to be put into the game as his own NPC! Keep an eye out for him, he may be able to help you out... or not ;)

All in all, I am both excited and nervous to get this finished and released for you guys and gals who play or will eventually play Potion Maze. I have a pretty busy work week ahead, so I won't make any promises on a release window. But it is coming, and you can always view the Retr0Brine Games facebook page for potential updates and other news regarding what we have in store. That's all for now! Take care of yourselves, and have a good rest of your day/night.
